Books you should read if you want to understand your brain

Understanding the brain isn’t just for scientists; our brains shape every moment of our lives, from the way we think, feel, decide, and even when we sleep. For anyone curious about how the brain shapes our lives, there’s no shortage of excellent popular science writing. Here, I will tell you about my top 8 neuroscience-related popular books. Some of these titles are even available on audible, making it possible to learn neuroscience on the go!

This list does not include all neuroscience books available and is not arranged in any particular order; it is just a collection of books I believe are worth reading if you want to learn more about your brain!

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks

The first popular neuroscience book I read when I was undertaking my undergraduate degree. Narrated by the renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks, the book explores the stories of his patients experiencing bizarre neurological disorders, including the story of a man who literally mistook his wife for a hat! If there’s a single book that demonstrates just how strange and fascinating the brain can be, it’s this!

Behave by Robert Sapolsky

Robert Sapolsky explores human behaviour through the lens of neuroscience, psychology, sociology, and evolutionary biology. This book covers everything from hormones and neurons to culture and morality. Sapolsky breaks down what happens in the brain to explain why we do what we do, from acts of kindness to violence.

Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker

This book will definitely make you think twice about pulling an all-nighter. Packed with scientific insights but written with clarity, Matthew Walker’s book explains how sleep impacts memory, learning, creativity, mood, and longevity.

The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge

For a long time, neuroscience assumed the adult brain was essentially fixed. Through engaging stories of people recovering from strokes or rewiring after trauma, this book introduces the fascinating concept of neuroplasticity: the brain’s ability to reorganise and adapt.

Phantoms in the Brain by V.S. Ramachandran

By performing simple experiments, Ramachandran illustrates complex neurological concepts. This book explores puzzling phenomena like phantom limb pain, out-of-body experiences, and bizarre body illusions to reveal how the brain constructs our sense of reality.

Descarte’s Error by António Damásio

Offering a fresh way of understanding the mind-body connection and how feelings guide our choices through neurological case studies, Damásio’s philosophical and scientific book argues that emotions are essential for rational decision-making.

In Search of Memory by Eric R. Kandel

Written by Nobel Prize–winning neuroscientist Eric Kandel, this book is part memoir, part exploration of how we’ve come to understand learning and memory. Kandel tells his own story, from fleeing Nazi-occupied Vienna to pioneering groundbreaking neuroscience research.

Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman

Kahneman’s bestseller explores the two systems of thought that drive our decisions: the fast, intuitive system and the slow, analytical one. Drawing on psychological research, he reveals the shortcuts and biases that often shape our judgments without us realising it.

If you’re curious about how your brain shapes your everyday experience, any one of these is a fantastic place to start. If you want to learn neuroscience in a more structured (but still flexible) way, check my article listing the best online neuroscience courses.
